Margaret River

Does ‘Margs’ even need an introduction? This is wine and surf country; Western Australia ultimate chilled-out boho town. Spend your days leisurely wandering around award-winning wineries, tasting all the grape varieties and sampling the incredible food on offer. For towns elsewhere, that alone would be enough to draw tourists in. But in Margaret River, there are also art galleries, jaw-droppingly beautiful ancient caves, world-famous swells, and lush skyscraper forests to see.

Dunsborough and Yallingup

Beautiful beaches, café culture and festivals: welcome back to Dunsborough and Yallingup. Dunsborough is no doubt the busier hub, with cool surf favourite Yallingup, right down the road. Enjoy pristine beaches with velvety white sand like Meelup, or Yallingup’s famed surf breaks. Get further out onto the water for fishing, snorkelling, or diving a shipwreck. These towns are favourites with the kids, with water parks, animal farms, horse riding and more. Oh, and just to top it all off, this is among the best spots to see whales migrating up the coast.

Busselton

Who hasn’t had at least one family holiday in Busselton? It’s almost a rite of passage of living in Western Australia. The laid-back coastal city’s main attraction is Busselton Jetty. Nearly 2 km out to sea, with 360-degree views of Geographe Bay, it is the longest timber-piled jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. It has survived cyclones and fires, and is older than the telephone and lightbulb! Throw in fantastic fishing spots, craft breweries, galleries and museums, and it’s no wonder Busselton has remained one of Western Australia’s best all-round destinations for the whole family.

Augusta

The quieter cousin of Margaret River, Augusta sits squarely on the doorstep where two great oceans meet – the expanse of the Indian Ocean and the wilds of the Southern Ocean. The 39-metre-high Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse is a must-visit attraction only a short drive from the town centre and stands proudly watching out over the water since 1895. Don’t miss other activities around Augusta like canoeing on Blackwood River, visiting Jewel Cave or walking the Cape to Cape trail. And don’t forget to get up close to the friendly stingrays that inhabit Hamelin Bay.
