Where to find Margaret River gourmet foods for your pantry

Foodies, this one’s for you, so please gather ‘round.

Now that we are all here, let’s be honest: is there anything better than trying new foods on holiday? All those cheeses, breads, sweets, and mouth-watering meals you wax lyrical about afterwards; new food adventures are one of life’s great pleasures.

You don’t have to galivant around to restaurants non-stop if you don’t want. It’s very doable to couple your food adventures with relaxation at your holiday home – but you’ll need to get your pantry stocked with some choice items first. There are major supermarkets in the region where you can stock up on the staples, but we also recommend buying specialty goods from local producers for the full at-home culinary experience.

Here’s where you need to shop for your holiday to the Margaret River region.

Bunbury Farmers Market

On the right hand side of the highway on the way down south is this absolute stellar find. So, what do they have? Really, the question should be what don’t they have? This place is food heaven. Think of it as your bakery, greengrocer, café, takeaway, and butcher under one roof. There are all sorts of top-quality fruit and veg, heat-and-eat snacks and meals, gourmet cheeses, cakes, and flowers too. The Turkish bread is delicious, so do try to get your hands on some.

Western Growers Fresh Busselton

This is such a great market but there’s one feature that we absolutely love: drive through. Pick a box online and roll up to pick it up; perfect for holiday makers who want a scrumptious haul of food available as soon as they walk through the door. Choose from a big variety of carefully planned boxes, including Danielle’s Easy Family Dinner, the Essentials, or Mike’s Family Snack Box – crackers, brie, olives, dip, popcorn … yes please!

Margaret River Saturday Farmers Market.

Local markets

We frequently recommend the fabulous markets around the region, and we won’t apologise for that. The Margaret River Farmers Market outdoor on Saturdays is legendary, The Shed Market in Busselton has a variety of offerings beyond food, and at the Vasse Markets (one of the oldest markets in the South West) you can find babywear, homewares and succulents among the fresh produce stalls.

Blue Ginger Fine Foods

This continental deli and grocer sells all sorts of regional and international fare. Peruse the aisles of fresh breads and vegetables, packaged goods such as spices and ancient grains, and handmade treats from local establishments. You’ll find so much variety for your food adventures. And if you’re lucky, nab some fresh-made pasta courtesy of popular Italian restaurant La Scarpetta Trattoria, as well as truffle products from this year’s truffle season in Manjimup.

The region’s most famous chocolatier has a lot to offer. Stock up on creamy handmade truffles, chocolate-coated marshmallows and pretzels, plus bars and bars of chocolate (the sea salted caramel milk chocolate is divine). Or indulge in a bit of retro nostalgia and buy yourself a tin of After Dinner Mint Drinking Chocolate for a cool evening in your lounge room. You, a steaming mug in your hands, and a cosy snuggle on the couch. You might also like to visit The Providore next door for homemade sauce, pickles, relishes, pasta and lots more.

Move over mass-produced cheese and hello hand-crafted goodness. Order the grazing box with a selection of seasonal cheese, dried fruits, salami, bread and crackers. You won’t regret it. And in the utmost convenience, Yallingup Cheese will even deliver right to your door. We recommend, of course, a great bottle of local red or white to complement your meal – a quintessential Margaret River weekend. Or if you are a real cheese-lover, book in for one of Alana’s cheese-making courses.

Yallingup Woodfired Bread

There’s a very good reason why pretty much every restaurant and café you visit explicitly states this bread is on the menu. It’s known far and wide that this is the benchmark in bread-land. There are several varieties of their famous sourdough which, if you turn up at the right time, will be hot and smell ridiculously good as it’s handed to you in a paper bag. And if you love fruit bread, we implore you to not go past their version – you will be powerless to resist tearing off chunks before you even set foot in your holiday home.

Nougat

The go-to nougat expert in the region is undoubtedly Bettenay’s. Offering dozens of interesting flavours, forget the usual suspects you come across and try something new. There’s apple, pecan and cinnamon; date and walnut; coffee and almond; chai latte and vanilla; liquorice twist; and even a limoncello crème. Perfect for that post-meal sweet hit.

There were so many others to mention, we could have filled another blog. In fact, we did! Read more about the region’s best food.
