Cheese tours in WA’s South-West
The South-West is a bona fide foodie haven. Some of Australia’s finest wine, beer, meat, ice cream and chocolates are right here. And the cherry on top? Gourmet cheese.
If you’re thinking of a DIY cheese tour or joining an organised group tour during your next escape to the region, you’ve come to the right place. Plenty of winery tour operators have cheese and chocolate factories on their regular itineraries, too. Cheers Winery Tours Margaret River and Top Drop Tours are two worth booking. Visit our Wine Touring in Margaret River blog for more information. For the DIY-ers, the below gourmet cheese producers have you well and truly covered. Whether you are partial to a generous portion of creamy brie on a cracker, a sliver of sharp vintage cheddar with dried fruit, or are a fan of the non-dairy varieties, a drop-in visit, tour, or cheese-making class is a must.
Margaret River Dairy Company
Their story begins with Italian migrants who crafted their art and love of cheese in Perth, before packing up and moving to the green pastures of Margaret River many decades ago. Savour award-winning produce including the gold-medal-winning Black Label Triple Cream Brie, Herb and Garlic Feta, and the Sweet Chilli Cheddar. Drop by the dairy (open every day from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or get a group of friends together for a tour. Warning: you will come away with armfuls of incredible cheeses to live on for the next few months.

Yallingup Cheese Company
Nestled in the lush rolling hills in the Metricup district (and only a stone’s throw from the popular Margaret River Chocolate Company) is the family-owned Yallingup Cheese Company. With their focus on fresh, quality produce, milk received is used in the cheesery that same day. Sample plump mozzarella balls, smooth marinated feta, nutty camembert, and delicate mould-ripened rounds of St Julian. Cheese-lovers, go one step further and sign up for a hands-on class: try the camembert and brie combo, the mozzarella class, or the goat cheese session. Each one also includes a wine pairing lesson. Classes book up in advance so don’t procrastinate.

Ha-Ve Harvey Cheese
Slightly further north, near Bunbury, is Harvey Cheese. If you’re driving further south to Margaret River, the land of wine and chocolate, this is a great stop-off – right off the main highway. Harvey Cheese uses the freshest, creamiest milk from local cows. Sample their award-winning blue vein, haloumi, goat and sheep feta, or the ‘Naked Goat’ firm cheese. Or, learn to make cheese with the head cheesemaker, Robert. You’ll discover: pasteurisation, homogenisation, cheese spoilage, caring for and maturing of cheese and, best of all, you’ll create your own to take with you.
